Reena Ellis and the Pink Panda Problem by A.C. Williams
Reena Ellis has a big problem.
When she discovers a red panda--a pink red panda?--hidden in her father’s office, she wonders what’s going on. But when the cute, cuddly critter escapes and runs into the city, can Reena get it back before her dad finds out?
But there’s a bigger The pink panda isn’t actually a panda. Sort of like Reena isn’t just a fourteen-year-old girl.
Reena is actually a princess!
GENRE: Superhero, Junior Fiction
AVAILABILITY: Amazon (ebook, paperback)
OPENING THOUGHTS: Reena Ellis might be the weakest in her family, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t destined for greatness. When an adorably grumpy pink red panda invades Reena’s life, she soon discovers her true purpose. All along, she’s had unique gifts that have prepared her for the enormous task ahead, and her adventure is only beginning! A.C. Williams introduces a fun and rambunctious cast of characters who quickly steal the show. Reena and her best friend form a dynamic duo that’s perfectly matched to balance each other’s strengths and support one another through thick and thin. This quick and engaging story introduces several in-universe terms and sets the stage for an ongoing story that promises to be an exciting ride!
ACTION/ADVENTURE: Reena’s adventures begin with an unfortunate encounter with a bully. While not too much harm is done, abusive words and sticky tea make for an eye-opening start to this fit-for-the-whole-family story. Readers will empathize with Reena as she faces the bully without retaliating and heads home to lick her wounds and face her family. This story centers around the family dynamics that leave Reena, the youngest member, feeling weak and unworthy. Her journey involves discovering her value and overcoming her self-doubt. Much of this adventure entails chasing a pink panda who turns out to be much more than Reena could ever imagine. As she learns the truth, her world quickly becomes entangled in a battle to save the world from an evil force. For now, however, she’s still learning the basics, and her first battle remains pretty tame with a fitting resolution that involves using her mind over physical abilities and relying on her friends for help.
MAGIC: If you’re a fan of dragons, you’re going to love the dragon connection in this book. Most of the magic featured in this novella centers around dragons and the special connection to their riders. There’s also a bit of futuristic technology and gadgets, including high-powered scooters, body armour, fancy visors, and more!
FAITH: The book follows a Christian worldview of loving your enemies and being kind to those who hurt you. There is also a theme of discovering one’s unique purpose and knowing that each person has individual strengths, so there’s no need to try to be anyone else. Several of the characters mention prayer or pray when there is a need.
FINAL THOUGHTS: The Pink Panda Problem is only the beginning! Reena’s adventures provide a solid introduction to several new concepts, and the reader learns about the full extent of the problem right alongside her as the story unfolds. There’s a good hook to make you want to continue reading to find out if Reena and her allies will have what it takes to overcome the impending evil that threatens her world. A few references to a previous event made me feel I had missed something important, but it was still easy to enjoy this engaging story. If you find it hard to resist an animal sidekick, you’ll want to check out this origin story with Power Ranger vibes. There may be a few moments that fall into the “P” level, but it’s primarily a mild adventure with a hint of suspense, fit for the whole family to enjoy.
Clean Fiction Rating Explained:
As the name implies, the P rating is where the action begins. This is the sweet spot between ALL the action and NO action at all. When I say action I mean: fight sequences, suspense, tense moments where lives are on the line...you get the picture. Books with this rating can include magic, romantic themes, and some violence. The violence in these books is usually short-lived or not explicitly explained. I don’t know about your grandma, but mine is always up for some adventure. So if you are looking for books that take you on a journey, you are more likely to find them in this category. That is not to say that the following categories do not have adventure, but this rating is where the suspense begins.
P rating: may include more action, magic, romance, and “short-lived” violence, can employ more suspense
