We Will be Heroes by Megan McCullough
Make a movie. Fool the public. Save the world.
After VIGIL & ANTE Studios’ latest publicity stunt, Agent Rosemary Collins and former supervillain Ironfall must maintain their cover by starring in a film of their own. This calls for a precarious truce, one rife with suspicion. But with ANTE remnants still at large, the pair must set aside their feelings, join forces again, and hunt the enemy down.
Following their only lead, Rosemary and Ironfall barely escape ANTE’s latest secret weapon: a brutal villain with a tranquillizing touch. The VIGIL team now has more questions than answers, sending them on a twisted ride of challenged loyalties and revenge. Rosemary and Ironfall must figure out who is a hero, who is a villain, and whether or not they can trust each other before this new threat destroys everything they care about.
ANTE was always prepared to lose. Now they’re about to rise again.

OPENING THOUGHTS: Rosemary Collins and Ironfall return for more exciting superhero excursions in this sequel to We Could Be Villains by Megan McCullough. This time, the stakes are even higher as Rosemary must overcome her broken heart and betrayal as she works alongside former supervillain Ironfall. Ironfall says he’s changed his ways, but can he prove he’s trustworthy? Someone in ANTE is still trying to cause chaos and corruption, and it will take the teamwork of VIGIL to stop them before they can carry out their destructive plans. But when the FBI steps in to dismantle VIGIL’s efforts to thwart a new supervillain, will Rosemary finally find the courage to trust the former supervillain who’s captured her heart?
ACTION/ADVENTURE: Once again, McCullough packs a punch with fast-paced action and adventure as the team of agents and superheroes from VIGIL uses their skills to fight back against the evil ANTE agency. Hand-to-hand combat, escaping exploding bases, superpowers that can tranquilize with a touch, and, of course, the use of knives and handguns in self-defence against the enemy forces. In addition, there are a few scenes where innocent victims are caught up in the chaos and express emotions of terror, and the villains kidnap Rosemary as part of their plan. While separated from the team, the author mentions the captors tortured Rosemary, but this was not shown on-page. There were, however, a few on-page deaths as a result of gunfire. These deaths are mentioned briefly without gory descriptions.
ROMANCE: Ironfall is in the process of changing his heart and reforming his behavior. His feelings for Rosemary have grown since Book One, and his affections are evident in his appreciation for her beauty and his expressed thoughts about her. Rosemary also notices her growing attraction for Ironfall, but worries about whether he has truly changed and can be trusted. Kisses, both acted out on the movie set and authentic romantic ones, happen on-page, and Rosemary notices a feeling of warmth when Ironfall uses his healing powers to aid her after the combat scenes.
RELIGION: While religion is not explicitly expressed throughout the book, the author writes from a Christian worldview about the power of redemption, forgiveness, and second chances. These themes primarily unfold as Rosemary learns to forgive Ironfall for his past misdeeds, including murder, and as Ironfall comes to realize his need to change his ways.
FINAL THOUGHTS: We Will be Heroes wraps up with a heart-warming conclusion that will leave you feeling emotionally satisfied. I was sad to see that this was the end of the series, because I loved these characters and would happily read more stories in this world! However, I loved how things wrapped up, leaving no loose ends untied. This series is perfect for superhero fans who love Marvel, superhero movies, and all things comic-book heroes coming to life. These books explore the question,” What if superheroes were real?” in a fun and engaging way. Even Sam will grow on you by the end, and who knows, maybe he’ll get a spin-off series someday in the future. This series will have a couple of scenes that might make you “gasp,” but it mainly stays in the “P” level with some suspense, violence, and a bit of sci-fi magic to explain the superpowers.
Rated P: As the name implies, the P rating is where the action begins. This is the sweet spot between ALL the action and NO action at all. When I say action I mean: fight sequences, suspense, tense moments where lives are on the line...you get the picture. Books with this rating can include magic, romantic themes, and some violence. The violence in these books is usually short-lived or not explicitly explained. I don’t know about your grandma, but mine is always up for some adventure. So if you are looking for books that take you on a journey, you are more likely to find them in this category. That is not to say that the following categories do not have adventure, but this rating is where the suspense begins.
P rating: may include more action, magic, romance, and “short-lived” violence, can employ more suspense
